When All You See Is Destruction, CREATE

Have you been feeling the call to create lately? It seems everyone I know is picking back up their paintbrushes, getting back to writing, or strumming guitar after a long hiatus. Even people who have never considered themselves to be artistic or creative are talking about trying a new craft. The urge to create seems to be increasing on the planet right now, and I have a theory as to why. It’s to establish balance.

My time studying Ayurveda made me keenly aware of the way nature prefers balance. One of the most basic concepts of Ayurveda is “like increases like and opposites balance.” We use this concept to offer ways for people to recognize what they may be doing to keep themselves in dis-ease, and strategies to move into ease.

For example, this time of year it’s still chilly and there is a lot of moisture due to rain, snow melting, and thawing ground. You can see how the buds on the trees are getting swollen and full of water ready to burst into leaves once there’s enough warmth. So, it’s easy to see this is also the time of year we, too, can become too watery resulting in phlegm in the form of colds, allergies, and chest congestion. To balance water, we use fire. Now is a good time to eat spicier foods, including ginger and cinnamon. We can also balance with fire energy through strong exercise practices, or using a sauna.

The way nature craves balance, and how it is seen through the lens of Ayurveda is why I believe the world is starting to hit such a creative spark. We’ve made it to another inflection point of a New Earth. Old systems are failing and falling, truth is being exposed, darkness is being held to the light. There is a lot of destruction on so many different levels, and it’s happening worldwide. The opposite of destruction is creation; thus creative energy is what we are craving.

Those who have increased their sensitivity through practices like yoga, meditation, and ayurveda may be especially aware of the need to restore equilibrium. We are part of nature. We are not separate. Answering the call to create is a way we can contribute.

So, if you are feeling the call, I encourage you to act upon it. And before you say you’re not artistic or creative, here are a few simple ways you can create:

1.       Cook a meal.

2.       Sing.

3.       Dance.

4.       Journal.

5.       Draw.

6.       Color.

7.       Play.

8.       Make music.

9.       Sew, knit, cross stitch.

10.   Tell stories.

None of these has to be done for, or in front of others. The energy may multiply if you have others join you, but anything you do adds to the balancing creative energy the planet needs. And remember as you’re dancing and singing into your hairbrush, you’re just doing your part to save the world.
